Environmentalism and technology - choosing a decentralised blockchain

The blockchain journey, as a distributed mechanism to reach a decentralised consensus, has just began. With it, and specially in respect of our instance of a blockchain use, our focus is on how a blockchain can help open-up, distribute, share and include the global ‘ALL’ into the realm of environmentalism. By environmentalism we mean action, overt acts in favour of Mother Nature. We premise greater value, at this stage of our business lifecycle, on how interactive, flexible and manageable the platform can be, working with other e-commerce technologies including DB functionality, and the inherent greater opportunity development in a number of software languages renders, in both depth, scope and utility in the realm of future smart contracts and what they speak to.

Our Blockchain provider is building out their blockchain platform as a service, by internal development and development by their chosen partners and collaborators. Just as we serve to build-out our environmental Platform as a Service (PaaS), so it can become definitive of global environmental co-operation and collaboration; so too our partner is building out their PaaS with the addition of technologies and processes that will enable the widening of the blockchain/business/utility scope for our needs. We look at reported developments with great interest as we look forward to using the new supported technologies, for the benefit of planet Earth.

The environment4change team choose not to enter into the debate of what blockchain offers the greatest operation of a decentralised network. We do this without regret, as we choose to enter into another fray, much larger, a more critical fight, being the fight to preserve globally shared habitats and reversing the rubbishing of our globally shared waterways, air and land. It is this fight, and what blockchain bring to the melee that excites us!

As Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPOS) rewards the co-operation of delegated block producers, we are very comfortable to be supporting a platform progressive enough to see other variables, more threatening to the future utility growth of blockchain technology, being addressed in a meaningful way. Scale and cost remain critical considerations to anyone desirous of supporting a blockchain element for good, and our supplier appears to have chosen a sensible approach to ameliorate the best of blockchain functionality vis-á-vis blockchain’s non-competitive transaction cost, latency, scalability and poor network performance.

The underlying success of this inclusive, transparent and enabling technology resides within its ability to provide transparency to all functionality residing above it and all those new and emerging user cases it will be partnered with it. There no doubt will be a number of successful blockchain implementations and technologies focused on different user requirements of the blockchain technology. We see these technology iterations making some small sacrifices around traditional standards for the benefit of enlarging the greater good of what the technology can deliver the greater number of people. We are looking at the “mass-adoption” question, but not for the sake of itself but rather for the sake of the planet. In the early stage we believe this to be an acceptable form of compromised depending on the principle of what the application is delivering. For us at environment4change, it is enabling and empowering environmental action and participation, and sharing this with our globe village. The team at environment4change look forward to extending and enabling digital functionality and innovation around an Account, on a platform premised towards transactions describing ecosystem interactions. We believe we have much experience to share with the blockchain community, and look forward to doing so as development begins and matures.

Our choice of a Blockchain element is to enhance our service offering by offering service elements of transparency, immutability and fairness, by using a distributed and censorship resistant network protocol. Transactions within the Blockchain platform will be used to record changes to the blockchain state thus recording the important movements and interactions of value around the environment4change ecosystem. Smart contracts will be used to trigger changes to the Blockchain state, when and if certain criteria are met. Change is affected via a transparent transaction/s. It is not lost on the environment4change team that advances will be made in transaction complexity and flexibility, as time goes on. Thus, we will support what we can now, with the understanding and an undertaking, as the technology matures and becomes more sophisticated, more and more will be pushed to the data structure and upper supporting layers, to remove centralised control away from the operational functionality of the platform. Blockchain technology is a critical element of the architecture now and will play a growing role as the technology grows beyond what defines it today. We are exciting to bring blockchain technology, what it brings now and what it promises for tomorrow, to the environmental consciousness of everyone, for the future of everything including the cradle which nurtures us all.
